Vocal for Local Campaigns in India: Promoting Local Products

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about significant changes in our lives, including how we consume goods and services. With a deteriorating economy and escalating death count, India has been one of the worst affected nations in the world. This has led the government to focus on promoting self-reliance and encouraging the use of local products through the “Vocal for Local” campaign.

Need for being Vocal for Local

The pandemic has brought people to their senses, making them understand that they need to meet their product demands locally. The “Vocal for Local” campaign aims to revive the Indian economy by promoting and encouraging the use of local products and services made in India. Imported articles that have unconsciously become part of our daily lives have been screened to look for Indian alternatives. Our manufacturers have taken efforts to improve the quality of production and implement the ‘zero effect, zero defect’ policy.

Go Vocal for Local Campaign – Pushing People To Buy Indian Products

The “Vocal for Local” campaign is part of an economic package worth Rs 20 lakh crore announced by Prime Minister Modi. To make India a “self-reliant” nation. The campaign can be considered as an addition to the ‘Swadeshi Movement’ idea. Which was brought up by some great freedom fighters of the country, including the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi.

The campaign is helping to revive Indian brands in the current economic scenario. Creating awareness among the public about the importance of buying Indian products and services to support the local economy. By supporting the campaign, people can contribute to the growth and development of the Indian economy. While also promoting local products and services.

Vocal for Local Campaign is Making Startup and Business Owners Optimistic

The “Vocal for Local” campaign brought optimism among Indian brands. While using this opportunity to prove their brands’ mettle at the global stage. Big Indian brands promptly changed their marketing strategies and started focusing on ‘Indian and indigenous’ as big themes. MSMEs will be reaping significant benefits. The financial stimulus package of worth Rs 20 lakh crore announced by the Prime Minister. Unveils measures that directly benefit the MSMEs. It will help MSMEs to establish their reputation.

PM Modi’s call of being ‘vocal for local’ aims to expand the country’s start-up ecosystem

The plan is to create more local brands and take them at a global stage. So for brands to have a global outreach, technology will also play a key role. The most feasible way for local brands to reach a bigger audience will be through digital marketing. Digital marketing will help local brands to promote themselves globally and create linkages between the producers and the consumers. Companies like Bisleri, Patanjali, Amul, has already figured the concept of promoting Swadeshi. Now is the time for enthusiastic entrepreneurs to learn the ‘Vocal for Local’ advantage.

Not challenge-free

There have been challenges in the Indian economy. When Amul entered the multinational brands were dominating the Indian market. As they were having quality, advertising budget, and expansion power.

The government’s focus on promoting local produce in the food industry has been quite evident. To achieve this goal, the government has implemented various measures. For instance, they are emphasizing the use of local ingredients and prohibiting the use of lower-grade materials. These actions are aim are to build trust and gain support from local consumers. The government could consider levying a uniform 5% GST for Ayurvedic products and medicines comprising classical, proprietary, and OTC products. Currently, over 80% of Ayurvedic products fall under the proprietary and OTC categories that attract a GST of 12%.

Effect of Vocal for Local Pledge on Indian Companies

The COVID-19 pandemic brought to light the deficiencies in our global economic structure, which had gone unnoticed for years. With international travel and movement restricted, logistics companies experienced significant losses. As companies shifted towards a more specialized approach during this phase, they began to realize the benefits of focusing on specific commodities rather than manufacturing everything. This approach allowed them to enhance their proficiency in that particular material manifold. However, this labor division had its consequences on the formation of connected supply chains worldwide.

The prime concern of production companies has shifted towards fulfilling the primary needs and necessities of all individuals. Maintaining substitutes is also an indispensable endeavor to avoid panic when the universal supply chains collapse. Mini-sized stores and daily wagers have been the worst victims of financial instability during the pandemic. The vocal for local awareness emerged as a catalyst to revive the demand for local products. This acted as a boon for those industries that were having a tough time coping with the deteriorating circumstances.

Consequences of the Vocal for Local Movement

  • The Vocal for Local Movement had several consequences, including:

Reduced Reliance on Imported Products

  • The Vocal for Local Movement has reduced direct reliance on imported products and international goods markets. This has mitigated the pressure of imports on the country.

Survival of Domestic Companies

  • The Vocal for Local Movement has provided a means of survival for domestic companies. It has encouraged them to manufacture and sell their products locally, boosting local industries, and reducing the country’s dependence on foreign goods.

Self-Sufficient Nation

  • The Vocal for Local Movement has revived the chance for India to emerge as a self-sufficient nation.

Several arguments support the Vocal for Local initiative:

  1. Promotion of Self-Reliance: The Vocal for Local scheme aims to promote self-reliance among Indian businesses by encouraging them to manufacture and sell their products locally. This initiative has the potential to boost local industries, create job opportunities, and reduce the country’s dependence on foreign goods.
  2. Economic Growth: The Vocal for Local initiative has the potential to boost economic growth by encouraging local businesses to expand and innovate. This, in turn, can lead to the creation of new job opportunities and an increase in the country’s GDP.
  3. Employment Opportunities: The Vocal for Local scheme is expected to create numerous employment opportunities in the country. As per the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, it is expected to create 60 lakh new employment opportunities, which will include both government and non-government jobs.
  4. Reduced Pressure on Imports: One of the primary objectives of the Vocal for Local initiative is to reduce India’s reliance on imports. By promoting locally manufactured products, the scheme aims to reduce the pressure on imports and promote the country’s manufacturing capabilities.
  5. Boost to Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs): The Vocal for Local initiative is expected to provide a much-needed boost to SMEs in India. These businesses have been severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the scheme is expected to help them recover and grow.
