In a nuanced study, Shiprocket, esteemed as India’s 106th unicorn and a pioneer in the e-commerce enablement landscape, has meticulously unfolded the tapestry of e-commerce trends for 2023. The study notably highlights the ascent of Personal Care as the leading sales category, with Apparel, Footwear, and Accessories closely trailing. Together, these sectors form a significant 63% of the market’s sales, underscoring their dominant presence in the online shopping world.

Emerging Markets: The Surprising Growth of Tier 2 and Tier 3 Cities

The report brings to light the astonishing surge in e-commerce growth within Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. An impressive growth rate in Tier 2 markets has been documented, shooting up from 113% in the previous year to a striking 179% in 2023. Parallelly, Tier 3 markets have also demonstrated robust growth. The cities of Mysuru, Udaipur, and Tiruppur have emerged as key players in this upward trend. In the realm of Tier 1 cities, Delhi reigns supreme in sales volume, closely followed by Bangalore, with Thane surprisingly overtaking Mumbai in sales.

Regional Consumer Trends: Varied Preferences Across States

Delving deeper, the Shiprocket study observes diverse consumer spending patterns across different regions. Delhi’s populace exhibits a pronounced fondness for books, while Mumbai’s consumers show a preference for jewellery. States such as Haryana, Gujarat, and Goa are leaning more towards mobile accessories. The average order value across the states for the year stood at approximately ₹1700.

Global E-Commerce Trends: India’s Role on the World Stage

On a global scale, categories such as Jewellery, Beauty & Grooming, Clothing & Accessories, and Books have emerged as the forerunners in the e-commerce domain in 2023, reflecting a continuous draw of consumer interest. The analysis points to the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Australia, and Canada as critical international markets for Indian merchants. There is a notable variation in Average Order Values across these markets, with the United States recording the highest at ₹3,493 and Canada at the lower end with ₹1,404.

Through Shiprocket’s comprehensive and detailed analysis, a vivid picture of the e-commerce trends of 2023 is painted, providing deep insights for industry players and highlighting the expanding opportunities in both domestic and international markets.
