The Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) has taken issue with a Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) MP’s assertion that the country’s nurses’ uniforms are excessively snug. MMA’s president, Dr. Muruga Raj Rajathurai, expressed disappointment that the MP’s focus is on the nurses’ attire amidst serious national discussions on the future of Malaysia’s healthcare system.
Dr. Muruga Raj Rajathurai underscored that all nurses in the public sector comply with the standard civil servant dress code. He asserted, “The current Ministry of Health nurse uniforms are designed for practicality. They allow our nurses to move freely when performing their crucial roles in healthcare. In this line of work, being agile and occasionally, quick to sprint is vital in order to save lives.”

Dr. Muruga was addressing concerns raised by Kuantan MP Wan Razali Wan Nor. The MP suggested that the current dress code for nurses be amended, arguing that the uniforms were too fitted and not in compliance with shariah. During the Health White Paper debate in Parliament, Wan Razali expressed concern that the uniforms were overly revealing of nurses’ body shapes.
Wan Razali pointed out that the Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia in Kubang Kerian, Kelantan, and the Sultan Azlan Shah Medical Centre in Kuantan, Pahang, gave their nurses the choice to dress “more appropriately.”
