Pioneering Partnership for Enhanced Disaster Response
In a remarkable collaboration, Disaster Relief Australia (DRA) and Mitsubishi Motors Australia Limited have come together, leveraging advanced technology to significantly improve DRA’s disaster response operations. This strategic alliance marks a new chapter in utilizing technological advancements for humanitarian aid, particularly in areas prone to natural disasters.
Showcasing Technological Innovation
The collaboration’s highlight was the recent technology demonstration at Parliament House, inaugurated by Senator the Hon Murray Watt, Minister for Emergency Management. Mitsubishi Motors showcased their state-of-the-art bi-directional charging technology, designed to support rural and remote Australian communities during disasters. This technology is a game-changer for DRA’s Disaster Relief Teams, who often face the challenge of maintaining power in their field ‘hubs’.
A Revolution in Emergency Power Supply
The unveiled technology integrates vehicle-to-grid capabilities, allowing plug-in electric vehicles to provide essential power in rural and remote areas, even during power grid failures. This innovation ensures the continuity of critical services like refrigeration for food and medicines, operation of heating and cooling systems, and functioning of water treatment and communication systems. It enhances resilience and preparedness in Australian communities against natural calamities like bushfires.
A Sustained Commitment Since 2019
The partnership between Mitsubishi Motors and DRA, initiated in 2019, reflects a joint commitment to extend disaster relief across Australia. Their collaborative efforts have been further acknowledged and supported by the Australian Government with a significant funding of $38.1 million to DRA’s disaster relief initiatives.

Critical Need in Light of Current Challenges
The relevance of this technological solution is underscored by the Defence Strategic Review released in April 2023, advocating civilian-led emergency management. With the ongoing bushfires and predictions of further disasters, the timing is critical for such innovative solutions to support Australian communities.
Voices of Leadership
Senator the Hon Murray Watt, Federal Minister for Emergency Management:
- “The Albanese Government is deeply committed to disaster preparedness, recovery and resilience, and Disaster Relief Australia plays an important role in helping communities right across the country get back on their feet.
- The DRA hubs have become a symbol of recovery and reassurance for regions after a bushfire, flood or storm, so we welcome this new technology.”
Geoff Evans, Chief Executive Officer of DRA:
- “The technology showcased at Parliament House has great potential to be used by communities and DRA to increase power accessible to Australians during times of crisis or natural disasters.
- DRA has been proud to increase our capacity and capability to respond to natural disasters year on year and are grateful for the support of our corporate partners and State and Federal Governments to continue aiding Australians in need.”
Shaun Westcott, Chief Executive Officer of Mitsubishi Motors:
- “We are excited to showcase this cutting-edge and world-leading technology in partnership with Disaster Relief Australia, and continue highlighting Mitsubishi’s powerhouse innovation used to benefit Australian communities.
- Bi-directional charging capabilities have the potential to revolutionise the way in which we can manage the major impacts of natural disasters and increase resilience through integration into Australia’s energy infrastructure.”
Looking Ahead
Mitsubishi Motors’s bi-directional charging technology, already available internationally, promises to make significant strides in disaster response and environmental sustainability by integrating into the Australian energy grid for efficient energy storage and emissions reduction.
As the world grapples with increasing environmental challenges, this collaboration between Mitsubishi Motors and Disaster Relief Australia sets a precedent in harnessing technology for societal good, paving the way for a more resilient and prepared future.
