Works by Banksy and Invader sold for over $900,000 at Julien’s Auctions’ “STREET ART” event, which was a raucous celebration of the irresistible allure of street art. Held in Los Angeles on February 22nd, this event showcased 20 works by top street artists including RETNA, Jamie Reid, Jeff Hamilton and Fraser, Jorge Jimenez-Deredia, Louis Waldon, and many more. It also attracted a large number of online bidders and collectors.
Spotlight on Banksy’s Iconic Creations
The crown prize of the auction was the “Untitled Police Van Chimp,” a 2003 stencil on a glass van window, one of four works by Banksy that stole the spotlight. A piece of art from Banksy’s seminal “Turf War” show, this piece doubled its expected value and sold for an incredible $222,250.
“Mayfair Paparazzi Rat,” painted on a wooden door panel, “Crazy Horse,” an aerosol painting on a vehicle door, and “Gangsta Rat Live,” an aerosol on a metal door, all exceeded expectations. Not only did their exorbitant pricing demonstrate Banksy’s ability to engage and stir discussion via art, but they also served as a critique of society conventions.
