Your Only Competition Is Yourself

The only person you should be competing with is the person you see in the mirror.

As L. Tom Perry once said, “You’re not up against anyone else. You’re only competing with yourself to do the best you can with the resources you’ve been given.” He was completely correct.

It’s pointless to compete with others. There will always be those who are superior to you in terms of performance, speed, and intelligence. That is the nature of life. Competing with others will only irritate you. Competing against yourself will help you improve. So, keep your attention on yourself.

Personal growth and development offer the highest rate of return of any investment strategy on the planet. No stock, business, or product will ever produce the returns that personal development does. There is no greater wealth than the ability to develop oneself.

What can leaders do about it?

  • Leaders must encourage team members to share their knowledge, skills, and value the unique abilities of their colleagues to replace the competitive mindset with a collaborative mindset.
  • Allow teammates to make decisions, express ideas, be creative, and concentrate on their own work rather than unhealthy competition.

Members develop mutual trust and support each other to become the best version of themselves when they see their colleagues as a resource for achieving shared goals.

Grow yourself and only compete with the person you were yesterday.
