The Premier States for Web Developers
In a groundbreaking study by Digital Silk, a prominent web design company, a detailed comparison of various metrics reveals the best states for web developers. The analysis took into account average base salaries, remote work statistics, and a quality of life scale, which juxtaposed average wages against living expenses such as housing, food, and transportation.
An Overview of the Top 10 Rankings
Washington stands at the pinnacle with an impressive index score of 82.6/100. Notably, it offers the highest average base salary for web developers in the U.S., a whopping $138,780 annually.
Virginia, following close behind in second place, boasts an index score of 67.4. A highlight is its remote working opportunities, which represent 22.3% of the state’s entire workforce.
Maryland clinches the third spot, with an index of 66.9. It’s an attractive option for those valuing quality of life and remote work potential.
Colorado, with a score of 61.8, ranks fourth, offering an average salary of $80,270 for web developers.
In the fifth position, we find the tech hub state, California, scoring 57.7. Although it’s home to Silicon Valley, the high living costs might deter some.
Rounding out the top ten are Massachusetts, Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, and Utah.

Surprises and Shocks: Notable Mentions
An interesting revelation from the research is that despite California’s reputation as a global tech nucleus, it doesn’t secure a place in the top three. The East Coast, on the other hand, shines brightly, with states like Massachusetts, Virginia, Maryland, and New Jersey marking their presence in the top 10.
Web development is becoming a more popular career choice across America. Not only did this study analyze salaries and remote working statistics per state, but also living costs across the country. Measuring these factors alongside each other gave the finished list, and the results can be surprising; for example, California, known as a global tech hub and home to Silicon Valley, fails to rank in the top three. The East Coast of the United States comes out strong on this list, with Massachusetts, Virginia, Maryland and New Jersey also placing in the top 10.
