In what may be a devastating blow to the gaming community, leading gaming hardware manufacturer, Razer, has confirmed an investigation into a potential security breach. The breach is said to affect Razer Gold, the company’s widely-used virtual gaming credits system. This announcement follows reports of a seller on a hacker forum offering stolen Razer data for a whopping US$100,000 in cryptocurrency.
“We were alerted to a potential hack on 9 July 2023, impacting Razer Gold,” the company said in a statement. “Upon learning about the breach, the team immediately conducted a thorough review of all Razer websites and have taken all necessary steps to secure our platforms.”

The data on offer purportedly includes the source code for Razer’s products, as well as back-end access logins for the company’s websites. This information, if fallen into the wrong hands, could present severe security risks. A disturbing aspect of the data being sold is that it includes folders labeled ‘zVault,’ related to Razer’s digital wallet, launched in March 2017 and replaced by Razer Gold in December 2018.
The seller claims to sell the data to only one customer. The demand is for payment in Monero, a cryptocurrency that offers more private transactions, which could potentially allow the seller to maintain privacy.
Razer has assured its vast user community that they are committed to ensuring the digital safety and security of all its customers. The company has pledged to report this matter to the relevant authorities once investigations conclude.
The incident places Razer among a growing list of companies falling victim to cybersecurity breaches. Earlier this year, Goldheart, a jewelry brand, had the personal information of over 40,000 customers compromised when its eCommerce website was hacked.
