Soccer enthusiasts have much to look forward to as Lionel Messi is expected to debut with Inter Miami on July 21. Owner Jorge Mas revealed the team’s intent to reinforce their ranks with up to five new signings, giving a significant boost to the Major League Soccer team.
According to a Miami Herald report, Messi is anticipated to play his initial game for Inter against Mexican team Cruz Azul in the regional Leagues Cup. Messi, the Argentine captain, confirmed his intention to join Major League Soccer after completing a two-year stint with Paris Saint-Germain on June 7.
Although Messi’s deal has yet to be officially sealed, sources with knowledge of the ongoing negotiations disclose that he would join on a two-and-a-half-year contract, potentially earning up to US$60 million annually. Notably, the agreement also includes an equity stake in Miami for Messi post-retirement.

Mas further reassured fans that Messi’s contract would adhere to the MLS roster regulations, eliminating any potential of special exemptions for the soccer superstar.
Messi’s entry into MLS is deemed a “seminal moment” for U.S. soccer history, according to Mas. He believes that Messi’s participation will significantly enhance the sport’s status in the United States and contribute to its global recognition.
Mas also hinted at potential discussions to bring Messi’s ex-Barcelona teammate, Sergio Busquets, to Florida, while refusing to comment on talks involving other renowned players. However, he emphasized that the club is prepared to announce three to five additional signings, showing optimism for the summer season.
