As the world rapidly evolves in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), Indonesia is not lagging behind in recognizing and responding to the unique challenges posed by AI. Recently, insights were shared by Nindhitya Nurmalitasari, an analyst at the Ministry of Communication and Information, shedding light on these hurdles.
1. Protecting Privacy, Security, and Intellectual Rights: Nurmalitasari emphasizes that AI’s domain isn’t limited to personal data privacy and security. It also encompasses cybersecurity and intellectual property, adding an extra layer of complexity.
2. AI Maturity in the Community: Understanding and evaluating the community’s AI maturity level is another concern. As Indonesia is still in the technology adoption phase, striving for inclusivity in digital connectivity, its AI capabilities aren’t entirely developed.
Currently, the guideline leading Indonesia’s AI journey is the “National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence (Stranas KA) for 2020–2045,” formulated by the Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT).
Nurmalitasari explained the need for Indonesia to consider its specific situation, highlighting the contrast with the stringent AI regulations in the United States and the European Union.
Promoting Digital Inclusion
The government recognizes the challenges but refuses to be stagnant. Efforts to make digital technology more inclusive are underway, with the Stranas KA for 2020–2045 focusing on intensifying digital literacy programs. These initiatives empower the public to embrace AI positively.

Regulations and Laws
While a specific regulation for AI is still in the making, the Personal Data Protection Law (PDP Law) contains provisions that can be used as the foundation for AI governance.
Collaboration and communication among stakeholders, accompanied by suitable recommendations, are seen as crucial in overcoming these hurdles.
Indonesia’s Strides Towards AI
It’s evident that Indonesia is not only recognizing but actively working to navigate the AI landscape. The nation is engaged in continuous exploration, learning, and adaptation, relying on both local insights and global practices.
Through nurturing digital literacy and crafting thoughtful regulations, Indonesia seems poised to carve its unique path in the global AI narrative.
