The Podcast Boom in Australia
On the backdrop of International Podcast Day, fresh insights from YouGov Profiles reveal that the majority of Australians are now plugging into podcasts. A significant 20% of the population tunes in at least once a week, while an impressive 16% indulge daily. However, not everyone’s on the podcast bandwagon yet, with 40% of Australians yet to explore this audio medium.
Age Matters: Young Aussies Lead the Charge
The younger demographic, particularly those aged 25-34, are the most avid podcast listeners. A notable 27% of them listen daily, and 33% weekly. The 35-44 age bracket isn’t far behind, with 26% listening daily and 28% weekly. However, the older generation seems less enthralled, with a whopping 61% of those aged 55 and above not tuning into podcasts at all.
What’s Topping the Charts?
When it comes to genres, music reigns supreme, capturing the ears of 29% of podcast listeners. News & politics and comedy secure the second and third spots, with 17% and 14% listenership respectively. Science and true crime, both at 10%, round off the top five genres.
Gender Disparities in Podcast Preferences
Men and women exhibit distinct tastes in podcast genres. While 33% of male listeners groove to music podcasts, only 25% of females do the same. Men also show a higher inclination towards news & politics, comedy, and TV & movies. However, the sports podcast genre showcases the most significant gender gap, with 17% of men tuning in compared to a mere 4% of women. Conversely, women are more inclined towards true crime and health & living podcasts.
