YouTube Rewind: The Videos That Singaporeans Were Watching In 2019

We’re less than a month away to ringing in the start of a new decade! Before we pop our champagne, let’s take some time to pause, rewind and look back at the videos that made it to Singaporeans’ YouTube watchlists in 2019.

The National Day Parade committee seem to have a winning formula for their annual theme songs. Following in the footsteps of 2018’s top trending video, we sang loudly and proudly once again to this year’s track, Our Singapore. The voices of 27 musicians from different generations including Rahimah Rahim, Stefanie Sun, JJ Lin and Dick Lee propelled the video to #2 spot in this year’s trending list. Since its opening earlier this year, Changi Airport’s latest attraction, Jewel, has since become an instantly recognisable icon globally. CNBC International’s feature (#6) on this shining new ‘crown jewel’ also got locals and tourists excited about the 10-storey building that has welcomed about 50 million visitors in its first six months.

Asian music at the top of the charts

Singaporeans’ interest in Asian artistes were evident in this year’s top trending music and non-music YouTube videos.

Singer Jackson Wang’s rendition of a Jay Chou classic in the Chinese reality show, Sound of My Dream, topped the list of trending YouTube videos (non-music) and the audience watched a new wave of performers showcase their vocal prowess during the singing competition, Sing!China (#7).

Among the top trending YouTube music videos, Kpop fans were grooving to the tunes of Black Pink (#1), BTS (#2) and Twice (#8) while the smooth vocals of Mandopop singers, Eric Chou (#5), Jay Chou with Mayday Ashin (#7) and A-han (#10) warmed the hearts of many. Together with the catchy Tamil track by Dhanush & Dhee (#3), Asian music secured seven out of 10 spots in the trending music lists.

YouTube is home to a diversity of content

According to Kantar TNS, over 75% of YouTube users in Singapore indicated that YouTube has content that match their preferences. In 2019, beyond music, Singaporeans showed particular interests in food, sports and the environment. A simple yet heartwarming Korean-style egg fried rice (#4) satisfied the cravings for Korean cuisine in just minutes and an epic match between Liverpool and Barcelona at the UEFA Champions League (#5) kept Singaporeans at the edge of their seats. The growing interest in environmental conservation also had people rallying together for the rescue of sea turtles (#10) in the ocean.

Celebrating the local creators who stood out in 2019

Today, YouTube is also announcing the first-ever list of Most Watched Creator Videos in Singapore to celebrate our homegrown channels who have produced inspiring, engaging and entertaining content.

Coming up top is the beautiful proposal between Singapore’s top YouTuber, Jianhao Tan (>3.7M subscribers) and his wife Debbie that left the audience in happy tears. Millennials of Singapore, who was 2018’s Top Rising Creator also achieved another milestone by breaking into this year’s YouTube trending list (#8) and becoming the second Most Watched Creator Video locally by tackling the difficult topic of breakups on their Real Talk series. Riding on Kpop group, Black Pink’s Kill This Love frenzy, Night Owl Cinematics set the dancefloor on fire with an amusing challenge set to the beat of the iconic number to thank their fans for helping them reach the milestone of 900k subscribers.

Jianhao Tan, Millennials of Singapore and Night Owl Cinematics also claimed the #3, #8 and #9 spots in the overall Trending YouTube Videos (non-music) chart respectively.

One of the fastest growing channels in the list of Most Watched Creator Videos in Singapore includes the brand new all-female channel, Ladies First, by Jianhao Tan’s Titan Digital Media. Their content focusing on beauty, fashion and health struck a chord with the crowd and amassed a substantial following of close to 200k subscribers since the channel started in January.
