During the Reconciliation Week spanning from May 27th to June 3rd, an exceptional stance has been taken by Tonic Media Network, along with its subsidiary, Aboriginal Health Television (AHTV). As pioneers in media, they have publicly voiced their support for the ‘Yes’ vote in the upcoming Voice referendum, in a proactive effort to shrink the health disparity among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
The Voice referendum, a vital part of Australia’s government’s mission to execute the Uluru Statement from the Heart, will be conducted from October to December 2023. The referendum aims to recognize the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the constitution, setting the stage for a representative Voice.
Australian citizens will decide whether they wish to amend the constitution to acknowledge the First Peoples of Australia through an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice. Richard Silverton, Tonic Media Network’s CEO, affirmed their stand as custodians of the AHTV brand.

“AHTV’s primary goal is to bolster the health and wellbeing of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples,” Silverton states. He firmly believes that a ‘Yes’ vote in the referendum is a step in this direction by offering a voice to these communities.
He further noted that adopting a neutral stance would only lend weight to a ‘No’ campaign, which contradicts AHTV’s fundamental objectives. The AHTV network delivers culturally relevant education and information to Aboriginal communities through the Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHS) across urban, regional, and remote parts of Australia.
Launched in 2018 with the support of the Federal Indigenous Health Promotion Grant, AHTV has spread its reach to 507,493 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across Australia, through a network of 233 screens spread across 197 locations.
“Via AHTV, we are dedicated to improving health literacy and promoting better health decisions among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. We strive to deliver engaging, pertinent health and wellness information to these communities,” Silverton remarks, encouraging every Australian to participate in the upcoming Voice to Parliament vote.
