In a new study conducted by YouGov, Telkomsel is ranked as the premier mobile network provider in Indonesia, as affirmed by the majority of Indonesian consumers.
The revelation emerges on the heels of Telkomsel’s recent announcement about the successful comprehensive upgrade of its wireless mobile telecommunications network throughout the country. This improvement, according to Telkomsel, was engineered to dramatically augment both mobile network performance and internet connectivity for their global clientele.
The study highlighted that Telkomsel was held in high regard, particularly in Indonesian urban areas outside Java Island (65%) and in Greater Surabaya (63%). Here, more than three-fifths of consumers affirmed that Telkomsel provided unrivaled network coverage.
Indosat Ooredoo secured the second spot, being the preferred choice of 15% of the surveyed Indonesian consumers. The company was highly esteemed in cities within Java, outside Jakarta and Surabaya metropolitan areas, where nearly a fifth of consumers (19%) credited it with superior network coverage. However, it did not fare well in cities beyond Java, securing only 9% approval.
The third place was claimed by XL Axiata, the favored choice of approximately a seventh of consumers across different regions. The company had a particularly strong showing in non-Java cities, where it was rated second-best with 12% favorability. 3/Tri, a telco brand under Indosat Ooredoo Hutchinson, was the fourth-best-rated in the country, followed distantly by Smartfren.
A notable finding of the study was that the majority of customers across the top five telcos believed their current primary mobile network provider offered the best coverage in their area. Telkomsel stood out, with more than nine in ten (91%) of its customers expressing this belief. Following Telkomsel was XL Axiata, with 4% of its customers viewing it as the top coverage provider in their locale.
In comparison, XL Axiata, Smartfren, and Indosat Ooredoo garnered the confidence of almost seven in ten (69%) and two-thirds (66%) of their customers respectively. More than three-fifths (62%) of 3/Tri’s customers shared the same sentiment.
In conclusion, this new research provides comprehensive insights into consumer perceptions of mobile network coverage in Indonesia, offering a clear advantage to Telkomsel. As telcos continue to upgrade their network infrastructure, consumer opinion is likely to evolve, presenting an interesting dynamic to observe in the future.
