Indonesia’s President, Joko Widodo, commonly known as Jokowi, is set to convene with influential business leaders in China on July 27-28, 2023, with a primary focus on the burgeoning electric vehicle sector. He confirmed these intentions on Thursday at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base, moments before departing for a working visit to Chengdu, China.
His agenda features high-level talks with CEOs of companies that either already have, or express intentions of, making substantial investments in Indonesia’s economy. Particularly, these companies specialize in key areas such as industrial downstreaming, petrochemicals, renewable energy, and health sectors.
In addition to these CEO discussions, President Jokowi is due to hold a crucial bilateral meeting with his Chinese counterpart, President Xi Jinping. As part of their discussions, both leaders are expected to discuss the ongoing developments in the South China Sea, a recurring theme in their meetings.
This significant visit to China comes at the invitation of President Xi, coinciding with the tenth anniversary of the comprehensive strategic partnership between Indonesia and China. President Jokowi expressed his ambition to use this opportunity to address priority issues, which includes investment, strategic projects, trade, health, and other regional and global challenges.
The President’s schedule in Chengdu includes attendance at the FISU World University Games, an international multi-sport event, to lend his support to the participating Indonesian team.
Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung, Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, and Investment Minister Bahlil Lahadalia are accompanying President Jokowi on this important visit. The President is due to return to Indonesia on July 29, 2023.
