AYCC’s Bold Move Against Digital Misinformation
The Australian Youth Climate Coalition (AYCC) has unveiled an audacious initiative to tackle the growing menace of online misinformation, particularly concerning climate change. Their innovative solution? A website named NewsJacker that, on the surface, appears to be a simple homemade cookie recipe. However, its underlying mechanism is designed to subtly enhance the newsfeed of its visitors with more accurate climate change information.
How Does NewsJacker Work?
By employing prevalent adtech and sending specific signals to media publishers, NewsJacker subtly indicates that its visitors are keen on receiving more in-depth information about the climate. This clever tactic aims to break the cycle of algorithmic echo chambers that often shield users from diverse viewpoints and critical information.
The Inspiration Behind NewsJacker
“NewsJacker was inspired by the alarming rise in scepticism towards climate change, a direct result of the information they’re receiving through digital media and algorithms,” revealed Rich Williams, Executive Creative Director at Clemenger BBDO.
Global Impact and Reception
Since its launch in August, NewsJacker has garnered attention from across the globe, with visitors from 56 different countries. This widespread reach underscores the universal concern about misinformation and the need for innovative solutions.
Crystal Andrews, founder of youth publication Zee Feed and a media partner, commented, “The single-sided sharing of news is not a new issue within media publishing. Online algorithms have simply exacerbated the problem, shielding sections of society from the information they need to hear most.”

The Mission Behind the Movement
Grace Vegesana, the Climate & Racial Justice Director at AYCC, emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating, “Echo chambers are a serious and dangerous problem, leading to inaction. Young people in Australia want to make a difference; NewsJacker gives them this chance – a chance to challenge the thinking of the people around them and bring attention to a conversation that can be difficult to start.”
The AYCC remains committed to its mission of empowering young individuals to lead the charge in finding solutions to the climate crisis. With NewsJacker, they aim to spotlight the perils of misinformation and the pressing need for informed action.
