Dilema seorang trainer yang sering dihadapi ialah kaedah marketing. 

Macam-macam tips kita biasa dengar mengenai kaedah marketing yang berkesan. Daripada mass marketing, guerrilla marketing hingga ke permission marketing. Semua pun ada pros and cons, dan tahap keberkesanan tersendiri berbanding kos yang terlibat. 

Namun, bagi seorang trainer yang “lifeline” bergantung pada reputasi, perkara paling sukar dilakukan adalah mengimbangkan antara memberikan gambaran keupayaannya dengan persepsi dianggap menunjuk-nunjuk. 

Semasa terlibat secara aktif dengan BNI, saya belajar satu formula ringkas yang sangat bermanfaat.

“Visibility with Credibility equates to Profitability”

Keupayaan sesebuah bisnes membuat untung (profitability), lebih-lebih lagi bagi yang produk adalah jenama atau muka yang dikenali (trainer adalah produk serta jenama bisnes latihannya sendiri), sangat penting sebenarnya untuk mempamerkan keupayaannya (credibility) dalam subject matter lapangan yang diceburi. 

Visibility (keterlihatan) adalah salah satu matlamat marketing. Tidak salah untuk mempamerkan dan menonjolkan diri, cuma trainer perlu peka perbezaan medium atau channel (saluran dan platform) yang mana digunakan. Kita perlu tahu kita di mana – seperti pepatah Melayu, “masuk kandang kambing mengembek, masuk kandang harimau, mengaum.”

Jadi, di mana silapnya sehingga trainer yang mahu aktif marketing dianggap menunjuk-nunjuk atau dirasakan “show off”?

Pertama, kita lihat jenis platform. 

Media sosial seperti Facebook atau LinkedIn lebih jelas mempunyai territory (persempadanannya) yang membezakan private area dan public area. Dalam erti lain, kalau bahasa Facebook, “wall saya, saya punya hak untuk post apa yang saya suka.” Cuma, “wall” ini turut dapat dilihat umum melalui common area iaitu newsfeed masing-masing. Pengguna lain sebenarnya boleh pilih untuk “tidak lihat”.

Walau bagaimana pun, media sosial seperti WhatsApp group tiada private area. Apa yang kita post, terus ke common area. Dan ini menyebabkan ketidakselesaan ramai pihak apabila kita asyik bercakap tentang kehebatan diri di khalyak ramai. Ia sangat intrusive.

Kedua, kita lihat relationship. 

  

Sesi networking yang membolehkan interaksi face-to-face, lebih membantu kita membina rapport. Kita boleh pamerkan keupayaan disamping memberikan isyarat trustworthiness melalui riak muka, bahasa badan dan intonasi suara. Pendek kata, orang boleh bezakan sama ada kita “masuk bakul angkat sendiri” atau kita sedang berusaha meyakinkan mereka tentang keupayaan kita. 

Kesimpulannya ialah, marketing bukan sekadar beritahu orang bahawa kita trainer yang banyak program. Orang akan sentiasa kaitkan show off itu sebagai sifat negatif – walaupun kita kata niat kita baik. Trainer perlu berfikir secara mendalam sebelum memilih kaedah marketing yang sesuai dengan business modelnya. Ia berbalik kepada tujuan kita memilih satu-satu tindakan itu.
