Exploring the world should be an exciting and welcoming experience for everyone. The reality is that discrimination unfortunately continues to remain a key concern, particularly amongst the LGBTQ+ community. In fact, two in three (62%*) LGBTQ+ travellers from the Asia Pacific (APAC) have experienced some form of discrimination while exploring the world. This underscores the value in profiling destinations that not only celebrate diversity, but also provide a safe and inclusive environment.

This year, Booking.com is sharing five LGBTQ+ friendly destinations across APAC that not only offer a stunning travel experience, but also a heartfelt embrace and welcome – no matter who you are or who you choose to love. The featured stays are all Travel Proud certified, with staff members having formally undergone inclusive hospitality training.

Sydney, Australia

Internationally renowned as a queer capital, cosmopolitan Sydney warmly welcomes visitors from all walks of life with its progressive policies and supportive community.

The harbour city is home to the world’s largest LGBTQ+ festival, the Sydney Gay and Lesbian  Mardi Gras. But if you’ve missed it, fret not – the city hosts a range of LGBTQ+ events throughout the year, including the Queer Screen Film Fest, Fair Day and other cultural activities that celebrate LGBTQ+ identities and foster community connections.

There’s much more for folk to see and do during a visit too. Vibrant neighbourhoods, the likes of Darlinghurst and Surry Hills, are must-visits – renowned for their inclusive establishments. The western section of Oxford Street, in particular, is widely recognised as a bustling hub of bars, clubs and cafes catering to the LGBTQ+ community.

Where to Stay: With over 3,000 properties, Australia boasts the highest number of Travel Proud-certified accommodations in APAC. For those looking for a quiet retreat outside of the city centre, the Travel Proud-certified Wildlife Retreat at Taronga offers a serene and unique experience. Located within the Taronga Zoo in Mosman, this eco-friendly retreat provides a tranquil escape with stunning views of Sydney Harbour and close encounters with native Australian wildlife. Guests can enjoy luxurious accommodations surrounded by natural beauty while supporting conservation efforts, as the retreat is committed to sustainability and wildlife preservation.

Bangkok, Thailand

As the first country in Southeast Asia to legalise full and equal marriage rights for same-sex couples, Thailand has seen a significant rise in cultural richness with its bustling nightlife, diverse entertainment options and thriving queer community in recent years – further solidifying its status as a beacon of progressiveness in the region.

Aside from LGBTQ+ friendly haunts in Silom Soi 2 and Silom Soi 4, Bangkok also boasts a colourful portfolio of LGBTQ+ owned establishments, known for providing a warm and inclusive environment to travellers far and wide. Amongst these is Divana Spa, a popular massage and spa for those seeking a pampering break where all visitors can be their true authentic selves. Besides being a favourite within the LGBTQ+ community, Divana stands out with its exceptional service and quality.

For the 50% of LGBTQ+ travellers from APAC who prioritise a popular and lively inclusive scene when deciding on a destination, Thailand’s largest gay New Year Festival, White Party 2024, will be held over four days from December 27 to 31 at the newly renovated Paragon Hall at Siam Paragon. Drawing more than 25,000 partygoers from over 60 countries worldwide each year, this iconic festival is one not to be missed.

Where to Stay: Na Tanao 1969 offers a cosy and convenient stay just moments away from Bangkok’s bustling city centre, making it a well-situated yet peaceful escape for LGBTQ+ travellers. The modern homestay provides contemporary comforts and thoughtful amenities for guests to enjoy city views from the terrace and unwind with a coffee from the on-site coffee shop.

Taipei, Taiwan

Touted as the “San Francisco of the East,” Taipei is one of nine progressive cities and nine counties on the island where same-sex marriage is legal; workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation is banned; and every October, the city’s Gay Pride celebration attracts more than 50,000 revellers.

Whether you’re looking to grab a drink, catch a film or get some shopping done, you can find them all in Xi Men Ding, a prominent hub for Taipei’s LGBTQ+ community and home to over 25 different gay bars, shops and restaurants. While you’re in the area, you might want to check out GinGin Store – the first LGBTQ+ bookshop in Asia. Founded in 1999 by Taiwanese gay rights advocate Lai Zhengzhe, GinGin is a community space where you’ll find a vast collection of queer literature. Don’t forget to check out the iconic Red House, a historic building that has become a central gathering spot for the LGBTQ+ community in Taipei.

Where to Stay: Just a short drive away to Xi Men Ding, The Landis Taipei Hotel is a prime location for LGBTQ+ travellers exploring Taipei. Immerse yourself in a 5-star experience with this elegantly designed hotel, featuring sophisticated French art deco finishings, and three fine dining establishments – including a restaurant, whiskey bar and bakery, all within the confines of the property. Not to mention, The Landis is but a stone’s throw away from two popular Taipei gay saunas, I/O Sauna and Soi 13 In, for those looking for a rejuvenating time.

Singapore

With Singapore’s diverse social fabric and multi-cultural heritage, the city-state offers a seamless blend of warm hospitality and modern amenities. In it, Tiong Bahru is a heritage neighbourhood in Singapore well loved by the liberal community, and naturally it has become home to many in the LGBTQ community. During Pink Dot month in June, many windows there shine pink with rainbow flags proudly hung out on their balconies.

Make a trip down to Neil Road, also known as ‘Pink Street’, to check out Tuckshop – Singapore’s first drag bar. While you’re there, be sure to drop by Sausage Market, the latest kid on the block, alongside its sister establishments, Neil Conversion Clinic and Club Hell, two other notable LGBTQ+ clubs in Singapore.

Where to Stay: Located in the heart of Orchard Road, JEN Singapore Orchard gateway by Shangri-La offers a luxurious retreat with stunning city views and direct access to public transport, shopping and entertainment. This contemporary glass-clad hotel boasts an infinity-edged pool and spacious rooftop dining area, perfect for enjoying panoramic city vistas. While there, indulge in local delicacies and international dishes at the buffet restaurant. This hotel has been rated highly for its central location and accessibility, perfect for solo travellers and groups alike.

Kathmandu, Nepal

Second in Asia to legalise same-sex marriage earlier in April 2024, Nepal has made significant strides towards LGBTQ+ rights in recent years with major cities like Kathmandu hailed as a hotspot for travellers seeking an inclusive visit.

While exploring Nepal’s stunning landscapes and religious sites, travellers are invited to trek some of the world’s highest mountains, including Nagarjun Peak – located within the Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park.

In a move to foster LGBTQ+ inclusion, Nepal’s government collaborated with the Nepal Tourism Board in April to launch the nation’s inaugural trekking guide training programme tailored for LGBTQ+ individuals. In addition to leading treks, guides will be more than happy to introduce visitors to the local LGBTQ+ scene and community.

Where to Stay: Situated in the heart of Kathmandu, Kwabahal Boutique Hostel is a mere 5-minute drive away from the queer-friendly neighbourhood of Themal Chowk and other key attractions such as Hanuman Dhoka, Kathmandu Durbar Square and the Tribhuvan International Airport. Guests can relax and unwind after a long day at the on-site bar and restaurant or catch spectacular views at the shared garden and terrace. Bike rentals and car hires are available at this hostel as well for a quick exploration around the area. Families particularly appreciate the hostel, rating it 10 for its central location and comprehensive amenities.

*Research commissioned by Booking.com and independently conducted among a sample of 11,469 LGBTQ+ travellers from 27 countries and territories including: Argentina (201), Australia (606), Belgium (201), Brazil (503), Canada (804), Colombia (302), Croatia (204), Denmark (200), France (1005), Germany (1005), Hong Kong (203), India (403), Israel (204), Italy (603), Japan (402), Mexico (300), Netherlands (504), New Zealand (202), Singapore (202), Spain (402), Sweden (203), Switzerland (200), Taiwan (200), Thailand (202), United Kingdom (1007), United States (1000), Vietnam (201). LGBTQ+ respondents self-identified across demographics of sex, gender and sexual orientation. In order to participate in this survey, respondents also had to have travelled for leisure in the past 12 months. The survey was taken online in April & May 2024.
