The Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) has officially launched a refreshed version of the Skills Framework for Media, aimed at empowering local talent with the essential skills required for emerging technologies like Virtual Production (VP) and Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI). Developed in close collaboration with industry leaders and educational institutions, the framework provides a comprehensive roadmap for media professionals looking to stay competitive in a rapidly evolving landscape.
A Step Forward for Singapore’s Media Workforce
In an era where technology drives the future of media, this refresh marks a significant milestone in ensuring Singapore’s media professionals are equipped to thrive. The updated framework introduces 195 job roles across nine tracks, outlining 230 technical skills in areas such as VP, GenAI, content production, and production technical services. These additions reflect the growing demand for expertise in new media technologies, ensuring that both seasoned professionals and newcomers have access to the necessary tools for success.
IMDA’s strategic partnership with SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG), industry associations, and local training providers has been central to this update. By consulting with over 150 industry representatives, the framework aligns with the needs of a dynamic and expanding media sector.
Growing Demand for Media Professionals
The media sector in Singapore has seen impressive growth, with the total number of media professionals reaching 24,960 in 2023. This represents a compound annual growth rate of 7% since 2018, highlighting the growing employment opportunities in this vibrant sector. The refreshed framework provides a much-needed resource for media professionals to upskill and prepare for future roles, ensuring they are industry-ready.
New Apprenticeship Programmes for Hands-on Experience
In a bid to further enhance practical skills and create more opportunities for job training, IMDA is rolling out a company-led apprenticeship programme in partnership with seven media companies. Over 70 apprenticeship opportunities will be available across content production, business management, and technical roles, offering fresh pathways for aspiring media talent to gain hands-on experience in areas like Virtual Production.
Mr. Tan Kiat How, Senior Minister of State for Digital Development and Information, expressed the government’s commitment to building a sustainable media workforce, saying, “The Asia TV Forum and Market and the Singapore Media Festival are platforms for networking and collaborations. As Asia’s entertainment content industry grows, Singapore will be your partner to tell our stories to the world, and for the world to discover the talents and gems in Asia. Today, we are taking an important step to invest in the future of media – our media professionals so that they are equipped with the right skills, technology, and platforms to excel in this dynamic industry.”

The Growing Influence of Virtual Production in Singapore’s Media Landscape
Virtual Production (VP) has been a game-changer in Singapore’s media industry, opening up new possibilities for content creators and film directors. With the establishment of three full-scale VP studios – Aux Infinite Studios, Oceanus Media Global, and X3D Studio – Singapore is positioning itself as a regional hub for VP technology. These studios are also offering VP training, enabling professionals to sharpen their skills in cutting-edge production techniques.
To date, 28 VP content projects have been supported, and 650 media professionals have undergone training in this emerging technology, thanks to the S$30 million VP Innovation Fund. Notable projects, such as Time Apart by film director Ian Wee and The Old World by Glenn Chan, showcase how VP is revolutionizing content creation by overcoming traditional physical constraints.
What’s Next for the Media Industry?
Looking ahead, media professionals in Singapore can expect more specialized training opportunities in Virtual Production, with experts from both local and international markets contributing to the next wave of knowledge-sharing. The refreshed Skills Framework for Media, combined with ongoing initiatives like the apprenticeship programme and VP projects, is set to position Singapore as a global leader in media innovation.
