Coursera App in ChatGPT Goes Live in Malaysia, Bringing Trusted Learning into Everyday Conversation

Coursera (NYSE: COUR), a leading global online learning platform, today announced that it is one of OpenAI’s first-generation apps in ChatGPT, unveiled at OpenAI’s DevDay. This partnership marks the first time an online learning platform has been directly embedded in ChatGPT, making trusted, world-class educational content more accessible to hundreds of millions of people, including learners in Malaysia, where enrollments in Generative AI (GenAI) courses surged 183% year-over-year.  

Every week, hundreds of millions of people use ChatGPT, with one of the most common use cases being learning. Starting today, Malaysian users can access relevant Coursera videos and information inside ChatGPT conversations, making educational content more discoverable and turning everyday chats into dynamic, interactive learning experiences. To access the Coursera app in ChatGPT, users can ask ChatGPT for the app by name. ChatGPT will also suggest it when it recognises that Coursera content may be relevant to the conversation. 

“This partnership reflects Coursera and OpenAI’s shared commitment to expanding access to education and helping people everywhere learn, grow, and thrive,” said Greg Hart, CEO of Coursera. “By putting trusted, verified learning into the hands of hundreds of millions of people, we can help them gain the skills they need to pursue economic opportunity and prepare for the jobs of tomorrow.” 

“ChatGPT is quickly becoming one of the go-to tools for people who want to learn something new. But the most powerful learning experiences happen when human expertise and AI work together,” said Leah Belsky, VP of Education at OpenAI. “By bringing the expertise of world-class educators and institutions within Coursera into ChatGPT, learners can more easily find trusted content, build job-ready skills, move their careers forward, and unlock new opportunities.” 

Malaysia learning trends and priorities 

Malaysia’s rapid uptake of GenAI learning reflects strong demand for job-relevant skills. Popular GenAI courses among Malaysian learners include Google AI Essentials, DeepLearning.AI’s Generative AI for Everyone, IBM’s Introduction to Artificial Intelligence etc.  

GenAI adoption is cross-generational, with Millennials (58%) leading reskilling, followed by GenX (25%), GenZ (14%) and Boomers (3%). This trend aligns with national efforts under the National AI Roadmap 2021–2025and the AI Talent Roadmap 2024–2030 to strengthen Malaysia’s AI ecosystem through skills and research collaboration. 

The Coursera app, built on OpenAI’s Apps SDK, represents a significant step in making high-quality education more discoverable at scale, enabling Coursera content to be directly integrated into ChatGPT, allowing learners to transition from curiosity to credentials more quickly and with greater confidence. Coursera is proud to be the first online learning platform partner and among the first partners overall in OpenAI’s new generation of apps, including ChatGPT. Together, Coursera and OpenAI will continue to explore how generative AI can enhance learning by making it more personal, interactive, and scalable.
