Starting from the hustle and bustle of London, with the announcement of 2023’s winners of the Ocean Photographer of the Year Award by Oceanographic Magazine, the Australian National Maritime Museum is set to leave audiences captivated. The landmark museum is all geared up to introduce the world premiere exhibition on the 16th of November.
From London to Sydney: A Visual Feast
Witness the awe-inspiring showcase of all 2023 winners and finalists in this inaugural gallery exhibition. It’s an evolution from the mesmerizing open-air showcases in London, which attracted audiences exceeding a million during the past two consecutive years.
Museum Director and CEO, Ms Daryl Karp, expressed her exhilaration, “We are so excited to be partnering with Oceanographic Magazine and their extraordinary global competition, Ocean Photographer of the Year. The vision of the team at the magazine has quickly established this photographic competition as one the best in the world. ‘As Australia’s museum of the sea, we have embraced the opportunity to display these amazing images from ocean photographers globally, creating an immersive exhibition experience, while encouraging visitors to consider their role in preserving the oceans around us.”
A Global Tribute to Our Blue Planet
The Ocean Photographer of the Year isn’t just an exhibition. It’s a tribute to our blue planet and simultaneously a platform to shed light on the pressing issues it faces.
Will Harrison, the Editorial Director of Oceanographic Magazine and the Ocean Photographer of the Year, shared his enthusiasm, “We are delighted to be collaborating with the Australian National Maritime Museum to showcase this year’s beautiful and thought-provoking ocean imagery in a ground-breaking event. The exhibition marks the first time all imagery – finalists and winners alike, totalling more than 100 photographs – will be featured together in a physical gallery. It will be a spectacle; I can’t wait for the public to see it.”

The competition bridges the gap between amateur and professional ocean photographers, inviting them to present their most striking images. Judged by some of the world’s leading ocean photographers, the award comprises 10 unique categories:

- Ocean Adventure Photographer of the Year
- Ocean Wildlife Photographer of the Year
- Ocean Fine Art Photographer the Year
- Ocean Portfolio Award
- Young Ocean Photographer of the Year
- Human Connection Award: People and Planet Ocean
- Female Fifty Fathoms Award
The exhibition opens its doors to the public at the Australian National Maritime Museum on November 16.
