As Singapore enters its peak wedding season, new research by global fintech Revolut, conducted with YouGov, reveals that the joy of attending weddings often comes at a steep personal cost for many guests. Over 1 in 2 Singaporeans (55%) say they feel pressured to overspend when attending weddings — the highest among Asia Pacific countries surveyed.
Young Singaporeans, Females, Under Greatest Pressure
The pressure to keep up appearances is most acute among younger Singaporeans. A staggering 62% of those aged 25–34 report feeling financial strain when it comes to wedding expenses. The data also showed that Females (59%) tend to feel more pressured than Males (51%).
Singapore ranks highest in the region for this financial pressure, outpacing Australia (45%), New Zealand (39%), and Japan (21%). The data also showed that Females (59%) tend to feel more pressured than Males (51%).
The ‘Luxury Venue Tax’ & Other Financial Gripes
One of the biggest pain points? The expectation to give more lavish gifts based on the wedding venue. 61% of Singaporeans feel that a luxurious venue creates an unspoken obligation to give a more expensive gift — a phenomenon dubbed the ‘Luxury Venue Tax.’
“Weddings should bring joy, not financial anxiety,” said Ashley Thomas, Head of Strategy & Operations at Revolut. “Our survey shows how widespread the ‘wedding tax’ is — especially for younger Singaporeans trying to balance celebration with smart financial decisions. Revolut helps users budget, track spending, and even split costs easily — whether it’s for a group gift, shared accommodation, or travel expenses. Celebrate smart, not stressed. Your wallet deserves a seat at the table too.”
