Climate change

India is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change, and its effects have become increasingly visible in recent years. The country has experienced extreme weather events such as floods, droughts, and heatwaves, which have had a significant impact on its environment, economy, and society. These changes are also affecting the advertising industry in India, with businesses needing to adapt their marketing strategies to stay relevant and appeal to consumers.

According to a report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the average temperature in India is projected to increase by 1.5 degrees Celsius by 2040, which will have a profound impact on the country’s agriculture, water resources, and public health.

This change in climate has led to a shift in consumer behavior, with an increasing demand for sustainable products and services. As a result, businesses in India are now prioritizing sustainability in their advertising campaigns to appeal to environmentally-conscious consumers.

The FMCG sector is one of the industries that are most affected by climate change, with the impact of weather events on crops affecting the supply chain. For instance, Unilever, one of the largest FMCG companies in the world, has launched advertising campaigns that focus on sustainability and climate change. In 2020, the company launched a global advertising campaign called “Clean Future,” which aims to reduce its carbon footprint by 50% by 2030. The campaign highlights the company’s commitment to sustainable products and packaging, and emphasizes the importance of reducing carbon emissions to combat climate change.

Similarly, in the food and beverage sector, companies are launching advertising campaigns that highlight their commitment to sustainability. For example, Nestle India has launched an advertising campaign called “Maggi Sustainability,” which emphasizes the use of sustainable ingredients in its products. The campaign also highlights the company’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and reducing food waste.

The automotive sector is also responding to the impact of climate change on advertising. Many car companies are launching advertising campaigns that focus on electric vehicles and the importance of reducing carbon emissions. For instance, in 2020, Tata Motors, one of the largest car manufacturers in India, launched an advertising campaign called ‘Never been to EVergreen’ which focuses on the environmental benefits of electric vehicles to create an ‘EVergreen Bharat’

The real estate sector is also affected by climate change, with an increasing demand for sustainable homes and green buildings. In response to this trend, many real estate companies are launching advertising campaigns that highlight their commitment to sustainability. For instance, Godrej Properties, a leading real estate company in India, has launched advertising campaigns that focus on green buildings and sustainable living. The campaigns highlight the company’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable living.

In addition to the sectors mentioned above, the fashion industry is another sector that is heavily impacted by climate change in India. According to a report by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, the fashion industry accounts for around 10% of global carbon emissions and 20% of global wastewater. As a result, many fashion brands in India are launching advertising campaigns that highlight their commitment to sustainability.

For instance, in 2020, fashion brand Levi’s launched an advertising campaign called “Buy Better, Wear Longer,” which encourages consumers to buy sustainable fashion and wear it for longer periods. The campaign emphasizes the importance of reducing textile waste and highlights the company’s efforts to reduce water usage in its manufacturing process.

Similarly, H&M, the Swedish fast-fashion retailer, had launched a new collection called “Conscious Collection” that features sustainable and environmentally friendly clothing. The collection is part of H&M’s larger sustainability goals, which include using sustainable materials and reducing the company’s carbon footprint.

Moreover, the hospitality sector is also affected by climate change, with the increasing demand for sustainable tourism. Many hotels and resorts in India are launching advertising campaigns that focus on eco-tourism and sustainable travel. For example, the Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL), one of the largest hotel chains in India, has launched an advertising campaign called “Sustainability is Luxury,” which highlights the company’s commitment to sustainable tourism and responsible hospitality.

Finally, the Indian government has also taken several initiatives to promote sustainable practices and products in the country. For instance, the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan or Clean India Mission launched in 2014 aims to promote cleanliness and sanitation in India. Many businesses have leveraged this initiative in their advertising campaigns to appeal to consumers interested in sustainable living. Overall, climate change is having a profound impact on the advertising industry in India, and businesses need to adapt their marketing strategies to stay relevant and appeal to environmentally-conscious consumers. Sustainable advertising campaigns, climate-related messaging, and the use of green advertising networks are some of the ways in which businesses are responding to this trend. The FMCG, food and beverage, automotive, real estate, fashion, and hospitality sectors are some of the industries that are most affected by climate change and are launching advertising campaigns that focus on sustainability. As India continues to experience the effects of climate change, we can expect to see more innovative advertising campaigns that emphasize sustainability and the need to protect our planet.
