As Malaysia marks another proud Merdeka Day, Dettol, a trusted household name in hygiene and protection, is once again putting public health at the forefront of the celebrations. With over 90 years of safeguarding Malaysian families from germs and infections, Dettol’s enduring legacy continues to shine through its latest campaign, Selangkah Lebih, Selangkah Kasih. This campaign goes the extra mile, promoting gestures of love and care by protecting more than 50,000 citizens during the national festivities.

The journey of Dettol in Malaysia has been remarkable, deeply woven into the fabric of every home. Known for killing 100 illness-causing germs, Dettol’s products are a symbol of protection passed down through generations. As the brand grows, its mission remains clear—to reduce the burden of illness and create a healthier society for all.

Preventing Illness in Crowded Public Spaces

With large-scale events such as the Merdeka celebrations, the risk of germ transmission rises in public spaces. Dettol recognises this risk and is taking active steps to mitigate the spread of infections. Its Selangkah Lebih, Selangkah Kasih initiative focuses on spreading awareness of hand hygiene and protecting the community from contaminated surfaces.

Crowded public spaces can become breeding grounds for germs, especially when essential facilities such as wash stations are lacking. Dettol’s initiative highlights the importance of handwashing in these high-traffic environments. Studies by the CDC show that simple hygiene practices like handwashing can prevent 1 in 3 cases of diarrhoea and 1 in 5 cases of pneumonia in children under five.

The Role of Hygiene During Celebrations

The initiative emphasises the need for heightened awareness around touchpoints such as food stalls, public seating, and play areas, which can harbor dangerous bacteria. Dettol is deploying a dedicated hygiene crew at the event, equipped with hand sanitizers and antibacterial wet wipes, to provide Malaysians with added protection during the festivities. The team will also disinfect public spaces using Dettol Disinfectant Spray, a product proven to eliminate 99.9% of germs, including the COVID-19 virus.

“As we come together to celebrate the spirit of independence, it is crucial that we also safeguard our health and the health of our loved ones,” commented Tiffany Tang, Marketing Director for Health, Malaysia and Singapore, Reckitt. “Through our ‘Selangkah Lebih, Selangkah Kasih’ initiative, we are dedicated to ensuring that every Malaysian can enjoy the festivities without compromising their health. By providing the necessary resources and sanitisation, we hope to make a positive impact on public hygiene practices.”
